By  |

I simply love bananas! May it be Cavendish, Lakatan, Latundan, Senorita or the Saba (Cardaba) and Plantains. Knowing that bananas are rich in vitamins & minerals, rich in fiber and a quick energy booster, I just can't stop eating them as long as there's a stock of them on the dining table. Bananas are undeniably delicious especially for us from Uganda!

But, have you ever seen a banana bearing more than 2,000 fruits at one time? On the first look at the photo you might not believe it yet but it's certainly not Photoshop, it's genuinely true! With the height of 7 feet tall, this odd banana is to be found in Barangay Margues, municipality of Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, Philippines. I'm pretty sure monkeys who would discover this banana would really be happy! Datu Guiamad Dicolano, the owner of the banana said this wasn't the first time they had seen this kind of banana since their neighbor Kanis Kagi, from whom they got the banana seedlings have had taller bananas and bore fruits more than this one but they had cut it down already. The banana had caught attention of passersby who took photos and was eventually featured on ABS-CBN news. The same variety of banana was also found in Iloilo, Philippines but has 900 fruits only and still bearing more.

Bananas are known for high-potassium content and often recommended by doctors for those people having Hypokalemia (hypo=low + kal=potassium +emia= in the blood). I have a friend who would always have a bunch of banana on his backpack and would eat them everyday just to avoid hypokalemia to attack once his potassium level lowers below normal (3.5 to 5.0 mEq/liter).

Hypokalemia symptoms include muscle weakness, muscle aches and muscle cramps. It affects all muscles and organs including the heart. If cases are severe, hypokalemia can lead to dangerous disturbances in the rhythm of the heart (arrhythmias) that would eventually cause death. Bananas for my friend is indeed his natural life-saver.

One big banana, approximately 9 inches in length contains only 140 calories and 602 mg of potassium. It also contains 36 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber, 2 grams of protein and for those whose concerned on their sodium intake, 1 large banana has only 2 grams of sodium in it.

Not only potassium-packed, bananas are also rich in vitamins and minerals, one large banana have Vitamin A content of 123 I.U.. Vitamin B are also present with .15 mg of Riboflavin, .82 mg Niacin, .07 mg of Thiamine, .88 mg vitamin B6, and 29 mcg of Folic Acid. Vitamin C content is 13.8 mg. and on the mineral scale Calcium counts in at 9.2 mg, Magnesium 44.1 mg, with small indefinite quantity amounts of iron and zinc.
