Ghanaian Actress ‘Yvonne Ossei’ Releases New TV Show…Heart Of The Matter

By  |

Heart of the Matter is the new current affairs debate show that probes the issues facing Afro-Caribbean communities across the globe. The series is recorded before a live-studio audience and features guest panellists that are experts in their field.

Actress and scriptwriter, Yvonne Ossei, presents the show. In 2013 Yvonne became the first African Woman to win a British Urban Film Festival Award for Script. Heart of The Matter also has a Ghanaian producer and director, Bernard Kordieh.

The show is filmed in the heart of London’s Mayfair, at the prestigious UWC, home to the BBC’s Panorama and Channel 4’s Dispatches

The first episode on homosexuality, features panellists such as former Oxford University fellow Dr Rao who is hailed by the BBC as an expert in the history of anti-gay sentiments in Africa. It also features gay Nigerian pastor, Reverend Jide Macaulay, founder of The House of Rainbow Fellowship, a Lesbian, Gay Bi-sexual and Transgender Church, based in London.

Is it time for a change in black cultural and religious attitudes? In the studio debate, Reverend Macaulay states that …

”There is nothing in the Bible that condemns homosexuality”

Macaulay goes on to describe himself as
“The happy, holy homosexual”

From a historicist perspective, Dr Rao claims that years of colonial occupation of Africa created masculine humiliation amongst African patriarchs. After colonialism the ruling class amongst those black men sought to…

“Emphasise the masculine and punish any signs of effeminacy and same-gender relationships. Subsequently they chose to continue the anti-gay laws introduced by the European colonial state”

A promotional trailer (sample) of episode one has been released online on various social media platforms including YouTube, and the show’s twitter account @HOTMWorld. Full episodes of the show will be aired on TV in the U.K and Africa in the coming months.

Other episodes in the current series include

  • The Black Church As A Business Enterprise
  • The Relationship Between Colonialism and Christianity
