Holders Ghana Eliminated as African Nations Cup Throws Huge Surprises
African nations cup UK kicked off with fireworks this weekend. Twenty Diaspora African countries went to battle challenging for the right to win the biggest community football trophy at the first home of West ham F C -West ham Memorial grounds in East London. The tournament which was dedicated to Kwibuka 20- marking the 20th years of Tustsi genocide in Rwanda, was officially opened up by His Excellence Williams Nkuruziza High Commissioner of Rwanda in the UK alongside the CEO of the Essex County Mr. Wayne Deller and the Mr. Micheal Johannes marketing executive from Ethiopian Airline who are the main sponsors of the tournament branded The Ethiopian Airlines African Nations Cup AUK.
The holders Ghana were the victim of surprise on the pitch. They were eliminated from Group A which include South Africa, Zimbabwe Tanzania and Uganda. Ghana lost to South Africa and drew with Uganda and beat Tanzania and Zimbabwe but 7 points was not enough to take them through. Vintage Zimbabwe finished the group as leaders on 9 points joined by Uganda who narrowly joined them by virtue of a superior goal difference.
Fellow West African giants Nigeria had to depend on the results of Cameroon and Morocco to book their place in a last minute drama.
Now the scene is set for eight countries which managed to scuffle through into the knock out stages of the competition scheduled for this Saturday 7th June at 12 PM and 4 PM respectively. The Zimbabwe Warriors are the only SADC region country left in the tournament after the elimination of South Africa/Angola and Zambia. They will take on Sierra Leone in the quarterfinals. In the other second quarterfinal Somalia welcomes Uganda in the East African derby. The undefeated Somalia finished top of their group with 10-points.
The Indomitable lions of Cameroon will play Guinea Bissau while Senegal will be engaging with Nigeria! This so far will is themed as ‘ Who dares wins the West African battle’
On Sunday 8th June 2014, the ANCUK will reveal the first U-15 Youth tournament kicking off with participating countries caped to four, including Nigeria against Somalia and Morocco versus Zanzibar. The knockout stages are free of entry to all, with free food and entertainment and Free HIV test with counselling from Terence Higgins Trust-(THT) and Positive-East
The finals for Losers’ Game, U-15 and open age men will be hosted by Barking FC Arena, situated at Mayes Brook Park, Lodge Avenue, RM8 2JR next Saturday 14th June from 1 PM. The entry is £5 pounds for adults and £2 pounds to young people under the age of 15 years.
