Why Kevin Hart Won’t Play a Gay Character

By  |
Don’t expect Kevin Hart to play a gay character anytime soon.
In an interview with the hosts of The Breakfast Club on New York’s Power 105.1, the Wedding Ringer funnyman talked about the role that got away – Alpa Chino in 2008’s Tropic Thunder. Hart explained that he passed on the role because the character was gay. (The part went to Brandon T. Jackson.)

In an early draft of the script, Hart said the character was flamboyant. “The dude, he was doing a lot of stuff in the draft that I read,” he told the radio station. “It was real flagrant.”

When asked whether he’d play any other gay roles, Hart said no. “I can’t,” he said. “Not because I have any ill will or disrespect, but because I don’t think I’m really going to dive into that role 100 percent, because of insecurities about myself trying to pay that part. Does that make sense?”

Hart, 35, explained that he doesn’t have a problem with gay people, even if he won’t play one on screen. “To the gay community, I respect and appreciate everything you do,” he said. “As people, I love you.”
