Mel B rows with husband Stephen Belafonte and breaks down in couples counselling
- The couple starred in their own reality show Mel B: It’s a Scary World in 2010
- Mel, 41, filed for divorce from Stephen, 41, last month
- The former Spice Girl made string of allegations in a restraining order application filed on Monday
- Details allegations of abuse dating back from the year of their marriage and alleges he abused her in front of the children
As Mel B embarks what is set to be a messy divorce battle with Stephen Belafonte, clips from their 2010 reality show, Mel B: It’s a Scary World, have resurfaced, showing possible cracks in their marriage.
In the seven-year-old footage, Mel is seen snapping at her husband and labelling him a ‘big, needy, bald baby’ after he sulks that she won’t kiss him.
The Spice Girl, 41, warned her soon-to-be ex not to bother her as she’s ‘really not in the mood’ but was dubbed ‘boring’ for not wanting to be tickled.
The clips have resurfaced at the same time a recent interview given by Mel’s first husband Jimmy Gulzar reemerged.
The 49-year-old Dutchman – who was married to the star from 1998 to 2000 – claimed in a September interview with The Sun that his ex-wife made great efforts to sabotage his relationship with their now 18-year-old daughter Phoenix Chi.
He said: ‘Mel’s a narcissist. She’s always tried to put a huge wall between my child and I. But I stood there like a rock to be there for my child. I just think she finds herself more important than her kids. She is famous and the only thing you have in your mind is, “I need to be successful”, that drive is unstoppable.’
Dutchman Jimmy, who now resides in the US legally and works as a stage coach for young performers, explained: ‘I had times I wanted to give up. Then Phoenix would call. She doesn’t know I was homeless to this day or that I was illegal.’
During the interview, he also alleged that Stephen often tried to intimidate him – and he has vivid memories of one particular encounter when he, Mel and Stephen showed up at Phoenix’s Los Angeles school at the same time.
He recalled: ‘Stephen stepped out. I was like, “I’m not scared of you, you might be bigger than me and beat me up but so what?” He came in front of me. I stayed calm. He just threatened me. All I know is I’m not going to fight in front of my child.’
At the time the interview was published, a spokesperson for the star said in a statement: ‘Mel does not comment on stories that are not true.’
The claims come after it was recently reported that a concerned Simon Cowell attempted to help Mel escape her marriage to Stephen in 2014.
A source told MailOnline that the mogul was horrified by Stephen’s alleged control over Mel’s finances – leaving her without access to her own cash during the X Factor finale in 2014 – and tried to intervene with legal advice and the offer of a hotel room.
A source said: ‘Although no one was sure what was going on, Simon and the team at Syco really became concerned at The X Factor finale in 2014. In the days afterwards, following her release from hospital, they were tried to help her leave Belafonte.
‘They arranged for her to stay in a hotel, visited her there and tried to help her get a handle on her finances – it seemed as if he controlled virtually everything financially.
‘She never divulged to anyone that he was beating her up, but had told them she wanted to leave him and and they introduced her to divorce lawyers to help her to go through with it.
‘Unfortunately, he had already then gone back to the US with one of the children – and returned to LA because she feared he would stop her ever seeing her children.’
The source added: ‘Mel B is very much part of the Syco family and has been for many years.’
