MoneyGram giving back to Africa! MoneyGram awarded scholarships to 10 female students and a donation of $50,000 to UNICEF
In our bid to contribute and support Africa, MoneyGram this year awarded scholarships to 10 female students at tertiary institutions. These scholarships were awarded in Benin City (Southern Nigeria). The winners were drawn from the University of Benin, Ambrose Alli University, as well as Ekpoma and Auchi Polytechnic. The young women were presented with cheques, which would cover the cost of their tuition, books and accommodation.
More so, as part of our commitment in supporting the African continent, MoneyGram has provided a donation of $50,000 to UNICEF program areas: child survival and development initiatives in Africa and emergency relief efforts in the drought and famine-affected countries of Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti in East Africa. The Horn of Africa is facing the worst drought in 60 years, and famine has been declared in parts of Southern Somalia. At MoneyGram, we are committed to giving back to the communities in which we trade and do business!
“Gear Up for School” is another campaign that MoneyGram is currently undertaking in Africa. Throughout September, customers who received money at any of MoneyGram’s 3,900 locations in these three countries (Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia) will be eligible for promotional drawings in which they can receive school packs with pencils, pens, notepads, water bottle as well as laptop computers.
MoneyGram International has long been associated with Africa. Oluwaseyi Oke, Marketing Executive for MoneyGram, offers this view “I know the importance of supporting the local communities, which is why we try and sponsor as many African events as we can, right across the UK. The real advantage customers have when they use MoneyGram to transfer their money back home is that not only is the fee very low (just £4.99 to send up to £100) and the time very quick (monies typically arrive within 10 minutes) but customers know that their money is safe. I know how important that is to everyone associated with Africa. The great news is that people can send money using MoneyGram across the UK from every UK Post Office, a number of independent businesses and from all participating Thomas Cook and Going Places stores”.
