New Probe Into Mozambican President’s 1986 Crash
Johannesburg — The Hawks elite detective unit is investigating the air crash that killed Mozambican president Samora Machel, spokesman Captain Paul Ramoloka said on Wednesday.
“We are working with our Mozambican counterparts… we’re working with various departments and stakeholders like the Civil Aviation Authority,” said.
He said President Jacob Zuma discussed the matter with Mozambican authorities in October last year at the 25th anniversary of the death of Machel in Maputo.
President Machel and 32 other people were killed in the crash in 1986 under suspicious circumstances.
Speculation has persisted that apartheid security agencies were behind the crash.
