New Year Honours 2014: make-up artist Pat McGrath gets MBE

By  |

Make-up artist Pat McGrath is to be awarded an MBE for her services to the Fashion and Beauty Industry in the New Year Honours List.

While McGrath’s name might not be a household one, the work of the self-taught behind-the-scenes supreme can be seen on Scarlett Johansson’s face in the new Dolce & Gabbana fragrance adverts, to the earthy smoky eye sported by Catherine Deneuve in the new Louis Vuitton campaign.

Northampton-born McGrath was introduced to make-up by her Jamaican mother, and together they would troll make-up counters in their local vicinity for colours that would work on dark skin.

Now, she’s the creative design director of Procter & Gamble Beauty, heading up the beauty vision of top brands Dolce & Gabbana, Max Factor and Cover Girl. She’s also most likely to be the master behind the latest make-up look on the cover of Vogue Italia thanks to her rock-solid working relationship with photographer Steven Meisel.

When she works on the international catwalk shows (she’s in demand – Stella McCartney, Gucci, Versace, Dior and Victoria Beckham all call upon her services) the direction she takes each season is a bellwether for future make-up trends.
