Kigali — The Rwanda government has expelled six South African diplomats from Kigali for alleged involvement in espionage, impeccable sources in Kigali have told CAJ News on Friday.
Rwanda’s Ministry of foreign affairs Louis Mushikiwabo said in a tweet “We have expelled six South African diplomats in reciprocity and concern at SA harbouring of dissidents responsible for terrorist attacks in Rwanda”.
Earlier, South Africa had expelled three Rwandan diplomats claiming that they were linked to an attack by gunmen this week on the home of Gen. Kayumba Nyamwasa in Johannesburg.
It’s was not clear by press time whether Rwandan ambassador to Pretoria Vincent Karega was among those expelled.
The names of expelled diplomats were not readily available by going to press time.
There was no comment yet from South African embassy in Kigali despite repeated calls by CAJ News Rwanda Bureau.
In Pretoria, SA Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Clayson Monyela could not pick-up his calls neither his deputy Nelson Kgwete.
On the night of Monday to Tuesday, a group of armed men allegedly stormed Nyamwasa’s house in Johannesburg “trying to kill him”.
The opposition party, Rwanda National Congress said that was another attempt to assassinate again Kayumba Nyamwasa.
“General Nyamwasa and his family are said to survived because at the time of the attack they were not in the house,” the Rwanda National Congress (RNC) added in a statement to CAJ News.
The party “has no doubt that those who have always attempted to get rid of General Nyamwasa may also be behind the attack.”
Nyamwasa has already survived other two assassination attempts more than three years ago.
He was shot in the stomach outside his home in June 2010, after receiving political asylum in South Africa.
The alleged attack also comes just two months after a former spymaste Patrick Karegeya was found dead at a luxurious Hotel in Johannesburg. – CAJ News
