Summer 2013 BeautyAnd Fashion Trends

For Makeup

In terms of makeup, this season is big on statement lips and eyes, but just make sure you only pick one or the other to be your beauty statement – a bold eye colour and lip colour will look far more chaotic than chic.

So what lip and eye statements did the runways offer this season in terms of inspiration? With the resurfacing of 90s grunge, this season is big on dark, metallic smoky eyes. Try a metallic eyeshadow framed by a slick of jet-black liquid eyeliner.Or for a more striking look, try a simple smudge of dark black eye-shadow around the eyes, especially focusing on the lower lash line.Black, grey, silver and copper tones are super versatile and can be worn on the eyes to create a variety of different looks in different situations. Even better, the colours will suit most people. Invest in a good smoky eye palette in order to be able to produce both these looks and a wide variety of others, like these ‘shimmer cubes’ from The Bodyshop, available in both copper and metallic sets, among others:

Another key beauty trend this season is neon – both for eyes and lips. Pink popped all over the runways and we especially loved this look as seen at Donna Karan:

Or if you prefer to keep your eyes natural and your lips bold, why not try Maybelline’s Super Stay 14hr Lipstick in Fuschia for extra staying, non-smudge power?

If you’re heading to a festival this summer, be sure to take part in a further trend as seen on the runway: wearing jewels, gems and glitter on your eyes. Bold, striking, colourful creations, such as those seen at Dior, should be your inspiration:

Don’t worry about having to make your own intricate design or glue and place each pesky gem though – transfer sets and pre-made designs, like these from Topshop , do all the work for you:

The skin:

Glowing skin is a must have this summer. Make sure you keep your face happy and hydrated. Summer is also party-time. You probably lack some sleep. Well-chosen skin care products can help you look your best and hide those hours you spent with…well, not sleeping.

For Hair

Get those hair straighteners back out form the depths of your cupboards – after seasons of curls and waves ruling the runways, super-sleek and super-straight hair is back in!  Wear in a centre-parting like models at Marios Schwab for a simple, city-chic feel:

If you’re wearing your hair up, there has never been a better time to wear a simple low bun or ponytail. Start to steer away from the famous fashion ‘top-knot’ of seasons’ past – there’s never been a better time to wear your hair low. Look to Erdem for inspiration:

A trend that took the catwalks by storm this season – and divided the fashion community – is ‘wet-look’ hair, where product is combed through the hair to give it that over-shiny, sleek, ‘just showered’look. For a look that’s achievable in day-to-day life, simply get a high-quality hair gel and comb through the top of your hair and leave to dry. This is easier to do on actual just-washed, wet hair.

Finally, just a quick look at the high streets can safely assure us that this season is the season of the hair accessory – there’s never been so much fun to be had in hairclips, hairbraids, headbands and headdresses! For this, there are almost no rules. Just remember to have fun, and if you’re picking a big hair accessory as your statement, keep the rest of your outfit relatively simple. Here are a few of my favourites:

Flower and Rhinestone Aliceband from Topshop

Clip-in Braids from River Island
