The Baganda annual sports day in the UK – 2010 (UK Diaspora Events)
Sunday 29th August was yet again the popular Annual Clans of the Baganda in the UK Sports Day which was held at the new refurbished Newham Leisure Centre in London. Ugandans from all corners flocked to the stadium to witness Baganda clans’ battles for the trophy. The attendance was even better than in previous years despite the fact that many regular attendees did not attend because it was still Ramadhan.
Competitive activities included table tennis, badminton, basket ball, omweso, draughts, football and athletics field and track. The 50 plus had no excuse not to participate as there was a walking race as well. This year Promota Marketing Consultants managed to bring on board a few companies that included Brussels Airlines, Western Union, Jomayi Property Consultants plus the many volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly.
The core mission of this annual sports day is to promote community cohesion of not only the Baganda but Ugandans in the UK. This was evidently witnessed when the winner of the raffle ticket by Brussels Airlines was a Sebei from Eastern Uganda, who had came to enjoy together with fellow Ugandans this extraordinary annual event.
It is an opportunity not only to have fun and keep fit but to socialize with one’s social group, fortify the sense of togetherness and, probably notably, instill cultural roots which they should cherish wherever they are.
The medals ceremony was presided over by Owek. Apollo Makubuya (Buganda’s Attorney General), Prince Daudi Ggolooba, Nnaalinnya Elizabeth Nakabiri, Dr. Godfrey Ssekweyama (Deputy to the Kabaka’s Representative in UK & Ireland) and Fred Ssemugera the Chairman of Ebika Bya Baganda E Bungereza.
Mmamba retained the shield, Marked improvement was seen by Ndiga and Lugave who were second and third respectively.
