By  |

Its been nearly two years since she was crowned Britain’s Top Model of Colour. Nana Afua Antwi’s career is still on the rise!

This striking Award wining Model is not only known on the Catwalk but also launched her clothing line (Adopted Culture) and Charity Foundation this year.
She’s currently  landed an Acting role  and  working as a Presenter for Vox Africa TV!

Promota Magazine had an exclusive interview with the Rising Star and Cover Girl!
How did you get into modelling?
My Modelling career started when I got scouted by a Model Agent to walk for London Fashion Week in Sept 2009 two weeks after I won an Award of Excellence by M&M Magazine which was my first modelling competition. I came on the spotlight when I won Britain’s Top Model of Colour! I had the chance to walk at London fashion week February 2011where I was selected to work for the Matthew Williamson Summer/Spring Collection.

What have you been up to lately?
OMG! 2012 has been mad busy for me it was a great Honour to Host this year’s Afro Hair and Beauty Live plus winning 2nd place Young Humanitarian Award in my Borough. I just got into acting  for the famous Pan African TV Series Home Sweet Home which will be aired soon in Ghana, South Africa and in the Caribbean and also working with VOX Africa TV on the HI LIFE Show promoting African Music.

What sort of response did you get from family and friends when you decided to start out?
Wow! I am not the girl that grew around my family a lot, lost that bond at my early age so never had much support for my talents but am grateful I have been blessed to do what I do. My father was not into modelling when I started but now it has all changed he has been supportive and  he is now my No.1 fan (‘giggles’).  My friends have  been very supportive from day one and  pleased my dreams have become a reality

Good to hear of the support now, you really have to be thick skinned

So there are so many models out there….what makes you stand out?
I must say my signature walk, is always the most talked about everywhere I go. I have got a personality that shines through me.

Have you experienced any setbacks/negative encounters? How did you cope with them?
Yep! Modelling is hard, you need to be really committed and stay strong. I mostly experience a lot of negativity but I hold myself high and act professionally to cope with criticism.

Who is your role model and why?
OMG Loads of them it’s hard to tell right now; a lot of women have really inspired me from Naomi Campbell to Katousha Niane. I really admire Tyra Banks I always see myself in her, she  representing for Models of Colour really inspires me. A business woman who has opened doors for black models through her TV reality show, America’s Next top Model. More Importantly, the woman I feel is my role Model is my Grandmother Florence Boatemaa. When I was little I looked up to her a lot. A very independent Woman with no education but made life worth living. I still look up to her and it really keeps me going; she’s definitely my inspiration.

You launched your Charity Foundation  this year how is it going?
It feels great to launch Akosua Odei Foundation which is set for Young Single Mothers living harsh lives in rural Africa. The press launch was on 25th May 2012 at the Hotel Russel in west London and we managed to create awareness and raise funds towards the project.

What advice would you give to aspiring Models?
Shoot for the stars as there is no limit to what you can achieve.

So who is Nana Afua out of the modelling scene?
Am a geek (giggles) I love singing. I bet it is something people would never guess I could do (Laughs) but yes that’s my talent. I enjoy cooking, doing charitable work and spending good time with friends and family going to cinema and playing

Any upcoming shows lined up for 2012?
