Uganda Cranes Beat Kenya To Win 13th CECAFA Trophy

Uganda’s National soccer team, the Uganda Cranes on Saturday night proved they are the undisputed soccer kings of the East African region after they brushed aside Kenya Harambee stars 2 – 1 in the 2012 CECAFA Tusker Cup final to win a record 13th title at Namboole stadium in Kampala.

The champions successfully defended the trophy on home soil after beating a resilient Kenyan side.

It is Coach Bobby Williamson’s third CECAFA trophy ever since he was appointed Uganda Cranes coach.

Kenya’s Anthony Modo Kimono deflected a Robert Sentongo shot into his own net to give the Cranes the lead in the 27th minute.

Uganda’s goal keeper Hamza Muwonge who has been a spectator throughout the tournament was kept busy on the night as the Harambee stars tried in vain to penetrate the cranes’ backline.

Encouraged by the large number of fans who turned up to witness the national side win its 13th trophy, the Cranes put up a spirited fight to deny the Kenyans any chance of scoring.

However, the determined fighting spirit of the Kenyans paid off in the 86th minute when Edwin Lavasta scored for the stars, something that got many fans worried of a possible heartbreak.

It was the first goal the cranes had conceded in the whole tournament showing just how the champions have been disciplined defensively.

In the 89th minute, Baba Kizito set Namboole stadium alight with jubilation when scored the winner from a brilliant free kick to restore the champions’ lead and put the game beyond doubt.

To show, The night belonged to the champions, Uganda’s goal keeper Hamza Muwonge was recognized for keeping a clean sheet throughout the tournament until final by winning the goal keeper of the tournament, Brian Umony took home the player of the tournament award while Robert Sentongo walked away with the golden boot.

The Uganda Cranes Initiative campaign launched to garner support for the national side ahead of this tournament has certainly paid off.
